I made a visit to Cave Hill Cemetery last week and photographed one of my favorite memorials there. Near the front center of the cemetery is this gorgeous memorial to honor a woman by the name of Florence, who was the wife of Preston Pope Satterwhite. He used the idea for the structure from the Temple of Love, built for Marie Antoinette~
While there I came upon this little group of interesting Geese and learned that they are called Sebastopol Geese. With them was the most darling Duck that was running after them...well guess what it's called? A Runner Duck. They don't waddle, but rather run~
Are they not all adorable!!!
Runner Duck~
We have had mad dashes of snow this past week, not the kind they are having on the Eastern seaboard, but an inch, or two every few days.
The wee little Yellow-rumped Warblers came in nice numbers to partake of the suet~
A first year Red-shouldered Hawk, what a stunner~
Dark-eyed Junco checking out where it wants to flit to next~
Red-tailed Hawk down the lane has paired up and may be setting up a nest~
In my rides into town for my last week of physical therapy, yes my last week, since October, I came upon this beauty last week and saw it again out in the snow covered pasture in recent days.
Of course I had to stop and take a few more pictures. I believe it is a Friesian gelding and will find out soon more about him. Why? Because I have ordered some prints of him to gift to the owners, whom I don't even know...yet ;)~
We had 4 bucks and 12 does and fawns in the yard the other evening. I had to take the pictures just as the sun was lowering and through glass and so they aren't great, but wanted to use them~
I have helped move fawns, baby ducks, opossums, goats, horses, cows, even a Golden Eagle in South Dakota...squirrels and turtles across the road, and now this... Yes I know it's a Skunk...but it was a very young one and it had just been struck by a car. I found it on the far side of two lanes, going in circles, most probably from a head injury. It was trying desperately to gain it's balance and finally it leveled off and that was when it decided to try and cross the street again, and that was when I stepped in to help. I slowed the obliging drivers down just for a minute to allow the Skunk to get safely across. No one yelled, no one honked, it went very well. Now as for the Skunk...not sure, but just had to hope that it would rest and then rouse up feeling better and do whatever it is that Skunks do~
Snow cub fun~
Recently I learned of an app for my Android called Waterlogue. It transforms images into digital paintings, using different applications. I took some of my favorite photos and gave it a try...you can too~

You have had a busy week ... I love your description of the 'wee little Yellow-rumped Warblers' - they are precious and full of personality! The horse clearly knows how handsome he is - just look at that stance! Thank you for caring enough to look after the skunk ... most people would have thought 'it's just a skunk' and moved on!
ReplyDeleteGood to hear you are getting out and about Mary. More than I am this week with very unseasonal March weather that's put paid to any spring migration. Such a shame for that beautiful skunk so like you I hope it survived and prospered. It is awful when a creature gets an overblown and bad reputation, its name becoming a dictionary entry just for doing what comes naturally.
ReplyDeleteDo have a lovely week ahead.
Those little Yellow-rumped Warblers are so delightful Mary. Sorry to hear that your knee still pains you but glad to hear that you are able to get out a bit. And sorry about the loss of your dear friend. It makes us pause and think on our own mortality doesn't it. Take care of you Mary. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteHello, Mary! I am glad you are getting out and about. Your post and photos are beautiful. I love the cute warblers. The deer are always a pretty sight. The horse is handsome! I hope the skunk was OK, I always slow down for the critters crossing the road. Thank you so much for linking up and sharing this post. Also, thanks for the nice comment and visit. Happy Saturday, enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteDear Mary, what a week you had! I am glad you are getting better. My week was a little eventful. I broke a few bones for the first time. I fell off my horse (operator error.) The poor thing felt so bad. The skunk was lucky you found him when you did. It’s unfortunate that skunks have such a bad reputation. They are gorgeous creatures of nature. I hope next week brings you joy. Christa
ReplyDeleteWow you certainly have a wonderful series of 'critter' photos ~ favorite is the Warbler ~
ReplyDeleteHappy Saturday to you,

awwwww enjoyed all your critters and views
ReplyDeleteHi Mary,
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that your knee is doing better due to effective physiotherapy treatments. How kind and considerate of you to have helped that traumatized, little skunk across the street. From your description, I could see the scene unfold, hear the quiet of the unspoken communication between you and the other drivers, all playing their part to ensure its safety.
I am sorry to hear about all the sadness in your life, this past week, my friend. Yes, we must cherish every moment, every loved one, every breath, in this life.
Take care, dear heart.
Hugs,
Poppy
That was quite a week. Lots of different birds for you to observe. No doubt you will have to continue to excercise at home to improve your mobility still more so good luck with that. Sorry to hear that people areusing your photos without permission. Not good.
ReplyDeleteFascinating geese and lovely yellow-rumped warbler! I adore that estate and it's architectural elements. Such pretty deer, gorgeous horse and a funny (flirting with danger!) skunk! How on earth do you find out someone has stolen your photo or painting and put it on their site? Not cool! Did Pinterest contact you about it?
ReplyDeleteGood early morning. One evening a couple of weeks ago I had the twin grands over and we were doing some searches. I simply showed them how if I type my full name in on Google, or Bing to watch how many times Nana's name popped up. I saw my name on both a Facebook historical group page as well as my watercolour Peacock on two different Pinterest sites and even one of my Screech Owl images used on an Owl lovers page...I was totally caught off guard by it, flattered yes, but you think, oh my!
DeleteLots of wonderful images here. Sorry about the loss of your friend. I also lost a long time friend this week. Someone I've known for most of my life. Thank you for sharing a piece of your life with us ad all your beautiful images.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry about your knee and the theft of your photos. That truly is shameful.

So many great photos, and the dogs are just gorgeous!

A wonderful series of photos. I love the horses and deer, but those geese are impressive. So sorry for your loss. I hope your knee is much improved and hope the skunk lived. Happy Sunday.
ReplyDeleteMary, this was such a lovely post. You may remember that many members of my mother's birth family are buried at Cave Hill, and we (Bill and I) visited it once -- it is such a peaceful and beautiful place. The two new varieties of waterfowl were a delight to see even in photos and I can only imagine how pleased you were to find them in person. All your birds are wonderful ... I never can get good pictures of the little guys like your warbler -- I'm too slow. So I appreciate seein your beautiful pictures.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love what you've done with your painting app. Stunning. Oh and the owner of that horse is going to be so pleased to get his pictures.
Hi, Mary-- thanks for dropping me a note. I missed you too. I think I had gotten away from visiting G+ for some reason. Love all your images. That is one lucky skunk! The Butter-Butt warblers are departing from south Florida-- last to arrive in Autumn and first out the door in the Spring. I miss those juncos-- they never get down this far south. Those super-saturated art works look interesting for the most part. I wonder if there is an iPhone app as well. Best wishes!
ReplyDeleteGood morning Ken. The Waterlogue program is a free download on the my Android I Phone and I think it is found on other phones as well. I simply downloaded the created images then back onto my computer to be able to share on here. It's Free unless you want to try some of their extra kinds of medium choices. I found that is you wait a few days, those options change to give you more choices anyway ;)
DeleteLove the little yellow rumped warbler. I'm fascinated by cemeteries ... so much history and the art work is amazing. I always enjoy the critters you find. So much "stolen" artwork recently. So sad......
ReplyDeleteIt's really too bad that people used your pictures without first seeking permission, but short of suing them (which is out of the question) there is really not much you can do. If they have no sense of decency they will do it again. I really enjoyed the pictures of the skunk, a truly delightful creature, and I hope it made it safely across the street and into hiding. Great shots of the Yellow-rumped Warbler.
ReplyDeleteA busy week indeed, Mary, filled with many interesting sights especially the poor injured skunk. Well done you for helping him cross the road to safety, I hope he recovered once he was out of harms way.
ReplyDeleteYou must be thrilled now that your therapy sessions have come to an end, onwards and upwards from now on my girl!
BTW have the horse's owners seen your photographs yet, I imagine they will be thrilled to receive them.
Happy Mosaic Monday.
As a matter of fact Maggie, the images arrived in the mail this afternoon. I want to take them this week and gift them. We may get storms tomorrow and then would you believe the first day of Spring, we will get snow in the afternoon. I will have to wait and see which day will be the best to get out on. Hugs
DeleteOh my! You don't see many skunks alive and well crossing the road! Amazing photos! And the wild animals look extra special with a snowy background. Enjoy your week!
ReplyDeleteMary, I am glad you are improving on the walking. You always have such great bird photos. I grinned ear to ear when I saw the geese. Have a great week. Sylvia D.
ReplyDeleteGreat post as usual. But what is going on with that goose. Seem to be a domestic one but still. Don´t seem to be able to fly. Cool shots!
