Freezing Temperatures and Cold Frenzy Eating~

Parts of our state received between 20 to 25" of snow in a 24 hour period.  It left hundreds of motorists stranded on highways, just an hour South of our home for 48 plus hours.  I had planned on flying back from Florida on Wednesday, but with the dreary weather reports, we decided to see if my flight could not be changed.  Due to a mechanical problem, my flight to Florida had a five hour delay and it was because of that little tidbit, the airlines gave me a one time courtesy change and I was able to come home on Friday, after the worst of the weather for our area was behind us.  Here at home we had an ice covering and then a topping of 9 1/2" of snow.  My husby had to fight to get out of our driveway and neighborhood and then drive nearly 100 miles to reach me, but all went off very well and I was thankful to get back home.
As for this week, I had selected a few things that I had in draft form.  These were all taken on country lanes near where I live.  There are 2 first year Red-Shouldered Hawks in flight and another one perched and hunting down further.  I will begin to share images from my visit with my daughter and her family next week.
I am missing some of my regular people from my 2 posts last week and hope that all is well with each of you~

The American Robins always seem to know as does much in nature, before mankind knows that a weather alert is coming.  In this case we had freezing temperatures for several days before my journey began.  There were hundreds of American Robins eating Holly berries and filling up to the top heavy level and had to rest, before attempting flight~

The following 3 mosaics were taken upon my return home to Tingsgrove Friday afternoon~

  3. ahhhhh...all nice shots. I wish robins stayed in Tampa, and didn't just fly through. Their large colonies make for ews and ahs.

  4. Mary I am so glad you made it to FL and back....those pictures of the fences are fabulous as are the robins....I think the birds have had enough snow and are moving hoping to bring spring in their wake. Looking forward to your pictures from FL.

  5. Great shots of the hawks in flight and I've never seen so many robins together at once - fascinating!
Glad you got home from Florida even though it wasn't a smooth journey.
Thank you for linking to Mosaic Monday Mary.

  6. Calm cotton candy skies! What a stunning skyline; this just may be my new favourite photo of yours, Mary! Those robins are very clever creatures, and their instinct is certainly steering them in the right direction, filling up their tummies, in case of another deep freeze. The red shouldered hawks always seem so confident; I can see it in their eyes and in their form of flight!

So glad your hubby was able to fetch you on your return home from Florida. It must feel good to be back with your feathered friends, in your own neck of the woods, to wander about your vistas, and feel the peace and joy of familiarity.

Have a wonderful week, my friend!

  8. I love your photos - and what gorgeous light in the scenic ones with the fences, the pictures seem to glow with it. The robins are such a lovely rusty colour, much brighter and bigger than our little UK fellas. I can't even begin to visualize 25" of snow over 24 hours - the most we ever get down here in the south is an inch or two and even then the entire place comes to a stand still! Thank you so much for visiting my blog earlier, and so glad you got home safe and sound, how lucky you could change your flight.

  9. Hello Mary and welcome back from the warmth of Florida.

Those first landscape picture are truly inspired and in particular the very first one, the graduated trees against the pink light of dawn. And then the sunlight onto the frozen fields - tremendous.

The robins chose a good spot in which to warm their fluffed up bodies. I hope they managed to get on their way after all that refueling which you captured so well. Its good there were so many berries left after such a hard winter.

  12. Great set of photos as always and I'm glad you had a good return trip to the cold. Last year was the first time I saw robins in bunches like that.

  20. I thought of you and hoped yo were still in Florida when that terrible storm hit your state. Glad you missed the worst of it. Your images are so beautiful and perfectly put together. The robins ... So many of them ... Are just wonderful. We don't see them here in Florida! Before coming I always thought they were everywhere. I really miss them, it was always wonderful to know it was nearly spring when they first appeared.
