Seeing Red...Cardinals Galore~

On Tuesday I travel a bit further into the county to pick up the twin grands from their school.  It is mostly horse country and this past Tuesday the sky was a lovely hue and it made the earth turn golden.  This past Sunday I happened to look out into the side garden where I have a few bird feeders.  In one bush alone, there were anywhere from 11 to 18  Cardinals along with a few other birds.  What you do not see is that the surrounding bushes, also had them perched in good numbers too.  The center image of the mosaic below is a male taking quick flight.  Little Chickadees, White-throated Sparrows, Titmouse and Dark-eyed Juncos were also on sight.
I hope that everyone enjoys a good weekend, and upcoming week~

Remember to double click on the first image, to view a larger slide show presentation after you have read the narratives~

Oh no... an Owl is being eaten alive by a wee Downy Woodpecker ;)...well sort of~

The texture of trees~

A Red-bellied Woodpecker also makes an appearance at the feeders~

Just for fun, a tree in our back yard still holding it's Autumn colour...I turned it upside down and inverted the colours~

Carolina Wrens...we have a few that reside in next boxes the Winter months right up along our home.  I supply the birds with dried meal worms along with other goodies to help fuel them~

Splish Splash taking an Ice Cold Bath...BRRR...~

Two Gray Squirrels waiting their turn at some falling birdseed~

This Blue Jay was catching a spot of sun, as well as hiding in the bush, as a hawk was sounding from near by~

A few of my bird feeders, that bring many visitors to the yard~

An American Goldfinch and Chickadee came to see what all of the fuss was about~

The Eastern Towhee was checking out any odd berries, or seeds left over from the past seasons, as well as feeding from the ground beneath the feeders~

I was a little concerned when I saw several Eastern Bluebirds still here.  They should have gone South and last season many perished, crammed into nest boxes and cavities, with no food.  I do my best, but they hardly ever come to eat here~

  1. It's incredible to me to see all those cardinals in one spot! I know it's the official bird of Kentucky but still. There are sightings of them up here all the time now but I've never seen one yet. I'm waiting for that big day. I love the scene of the field and fences and pretty sky. I hope you have a great weekend and week to come. Pam

  2. Mary, I'm so glad I 'discovered' you. Loved these arrays. Amazing colony of cardinals. A pair of Carolina Wrens nested in our carport a couple years ago and never left. I couldn't remember seeing any of them at our feeders before that time. I love their vocalizations. Loud for tiny little guys. It pays for the droppings on my car *smile*

  4. Bare branches, missing their leafy partners, are being treated to bright and beautiful colour, with flashes of fire engine red, as cardinals flutter and fill in empty spaces, now bejewelled in crimson flair.

Thank you for all the critters and the winged wonders, but as you know, I'm partial to the cherry hued, who demand my gaze!

Hope you are well, my friend!

    Happy weekend!

  5. Oh, now I finally understand, Mary! Every now and then you visit the fairyland and take photos there! This kind of views - the handsome trees and the cardinals in the bushes - can't be seen in this ordinary, boring world where we others live...
    Wonderful photos!

  10. I am amazed to see so many male cardinals at once. In my yard, unless they're related, they are chased away. Makes for a gorgeous photo with the all those brilliant red orbs in the trees.
Thank you linking to Mosaic Monday Mary.

  19. What a feast for the eyes, all those beautiful Cardinals in your garden. Enough to lift anyone's spirits.

I love that picture of the Downy on your owl feeder. Obviously the pecker wasn't deterred by those by those owly eyes?

The stand of trees pictures is incredibly good. You have such a good eye for a picture Mary. Not many people would have seen that opportunity.

Enjoy the rest of your week and I do hope the snow relents but that your Cardinals stay around.

And that owl suet feeder is the bomb!! I want one.
    Love the blue jays too.

Oh, and that wooded area and the photo you shared...it reminds me of the camouflaged paintings of Beverly Doolittle somewhat.
