About a month ago, I shared images of a pair of Yellow-Shafted Flickers,
during copulation season. Most of the young had fledged, leaving two still
in the nest hole as of a week ago this past Wednesday afternoon. The hole
is on the hottest part of the tree, where 90 degree temperatures have made
everyone miserable the past two weeks, including the wildlife.
Yellow-Shafted Flickers are known for their dueling during courtship.
The guy on the top in first image, kept grabbing it's chum by the beak over and over again,
but the mate did not seem to upset. They were hungry and they really
wanted a meal to be presented and the meal was slow in coming. Once
it arrived then things quieted down a bit...until Thursday, and then things got
really, really bad for the next five, very long days. More about that
