Searching for Love~

Sometimes sharing bird images gets a little bit daunting when it is winter and we have basically the same birds day in and day out. One of my very favorite little animals are  Red-Fox Squirrels. The other day, while driving in horse country, I came upon this pair. The lighter, smaller one is the male and the larger, more glamorous in colouration is the female...of course. You can see that both of them have scars from previous battles. They live in an area where the fittest survive. They usually breed in January and in June and have litters of 3 to 4 young. I had the pleasure of caring for 3 sets of these beauties when I did my rehab and release work with Kentucky Wildlife Line and I must confess, I miss caring for these little guys. This species shall always remain special to me~

  1. I think they are beautiful, some people don't but, they will forever be in my mind.

  2. Wonderful post and pictures. I guess spring is around the corner when sap starts running up the trees and teenagers and other animals (birds) start looking from partners.

  3. These are so great, Mary! I love that you got both of them in the frame - soooo cute! I'm a fan of the fox squirrels too, they're pretty fun to watch, and they're huge! The ones in my parents yard, when i was young, I used to think they were rabid or something cause they would let me get so close to them. Ha! Love the photos!

  4. Those are gorgeous squirrels Mary, a bit like our Red Squirrels but probably bigger and definitely a bigger brush of a tail.
