Fallow Deers and Mocking Birds~

While searching the area of Land Between the Lakes for Bald Eagles Thursday and Friday, we came upon this lovely small herd of European Fallow Deer. The Fallow Deer species, native to both Europe and Asia were introduced to this area back in 1918.  This herd is widely believed to be the oldest population of the Fallow Deer in this country as well as it is thought to be the largest.  Their numbers have plummeted down to less than 150 and hunting them is prohibited.
Since this is a bird blog, I thought I better include one of the bird species that we saw on this journey, the Northern Mocking bird, which is always fun.  This bird happened to be hanging out with several species of Sparrows begging people that were coming and going from a well known fastfood restaurant.  I did not eat my French fries, but rather broke them into tiny pieces for the birds~

  3. Mary,

Never ever heard anything about this species of deer before. Thanks for sharing. I see a lot of Northern Mockingbirds but the only photos I have are Tropical Mockingbird.
