Doing Well With One Eye Missing~

Last week as a light snow was falling, I looked out one of the windows that face the side garden.  There are several types of bird feeders there and they were full of many visitors...Tufted Titmice, assorted Sparrows, Chickadees, Downy Woodpeckers and one lone American Goldfinch.  I got worried when I realized it desired some Finch food and that feeder appeared to be empty.  It did finally go to one of the other feeders and took in some nourishment, maybe just not it's favorite.  It then flew to a branch that was close to the window and as I observed it, I realized that it's left eye was not just closed, or blind, but it was totally missing.  It brought back memories of this past summer with Bleu, the one eyed Blue Jay that only survived 6 weeks.  Jays are more mouthy and they are easy targets for larger birds of prey.  The little Goldfinch has a much softer voice and was probably able to make it well with just the one eye.  It gave me another appreciation for nature and so much good that works together in it~

  4. Mary,

Sometimes these things happen. I'm the owner of a one-eyed orange tabby. He leaves the birds alone as he does not do the fast jumping thing.

  7. I see you still have the snow Mary but good for you getting out there and keeping the birds fed and taking those splendid pictures. Hope the little fella survives the disability.

  8. Hopefully if it copes through the bad weather it may survive but with that disability it is never going to be easy.

  9. Poor little guy but my guess is he's doing just fine. Birds and animals in general are so hearty. We had a male Willow Flycatcher at our field sites with only one leg..I was happy cause he ended up having a lady friend and a nest :) Great photos of the little guy, goldfinches make me happy :)
