Snow Makes Me Hungry~

I am not certain if the wee Carolina Wrens would be so hungry for stale crusty  artisan bread in the warmer months, but when we recently received a few inches of the white fluff, I threw out some large pieces of the delicacy and the first bird to arrive was one of our resident Wrens.  There are always two or three that stay in one of the protected nest boxes all winter long and they are wonderful little characters to have around...except for every morning when they each leave the box, they also will many times leave their "calling card" which when after it freezes, is a chore to clean up...~

Along with several feeders filled to the brim with a mix of birdseed, and one with just thistle seed, I also put out other foods that the songbirds and wildlife can use for nourishment during the frigid weather we sometimes get for a few months every year here in Kentuckiana.  If we have stale bread, leftover waffles, or hotcakes ( with, or without the butter & maple syrup ), popcorn, dry cereal, fruits, etc. it is a nice thing to help fuel our little friends.

The children and now the grandchildren have also in the past strung together cranberries and orange slices as well as a spread of peanut butter on  pinecones, then rolled in birdseed and hung by string from a tree, make delightful treats as well~

  4. Those little wrens are being spoiled Mary - waffles, hotcakes and popcorn? They certainly seem to be tucking in. I think I'll call round for some of your leftovers.
