Head & Neck Contortionist~

We live in a three story cedar sided home and we are constantly battling with squirrels and woodpeckers whom would like to take up residence in our home. If the woodpeckers do not begin a hole or two, or three in the spring, then the squirrels decide that their second season nest would serve them best if set up for winter in our home, and they gnaw a hole. Oh...and of course it is always at the tip top of the said three story house. My husby becomes not too happy with the campers on our turf during these stressful times. He has to get the super tall ladder out and then get it standing and then make sure that no residents are in their new quarters before mending the mess. This has taken place nearly every spring and late summer since we built our home twenty-nine years ago. Needless to say, when we hear hammering beaks, we head for a look-see. Actually the Pileateds never come to damage our home, for we have no rotten places that would harbor insects. The other evening as night was upon us, I heard a loud tap, tap, tapping and it was right behind our home. These images were taken through a window and it was also getting dark. I love how the woodpecker turns it's head completely upside down to use it's tongue to gather insects~

  2. Mary, I think that's the same guy who comes around here in the summer. ;) Aren't they simply an interesting looking character?

What I cannot understand is why, on occasion, when I am sitting at my desk, there is a somewhat thunderous sound just above me that is quite startling... a woodpecker attempting to drill the metal gutters. Crazy.

    Have a wonderful weekend.

  7. You make me glad that the woodpeckers aroung here keep to the oak woodlands and leave my home alone. Even our mountain home which is made of wood doesn't seem to interest them.
