My First Ever Viewing of a True Red-Headed Woodpecker~

OK, some of you may not be old enough to remember, but I grew up watching the antics of Woody the Woodpecker and have always enjoyed the antics of real life Woodpeckers. They are just such fun to observe and while out with one of my four grandsons, taking a nature day, I came upon two delightful chaps, and they were my first ever viewing of Red-headed Woodpeckers. One of them even caught an insect while I was photographing them and pleasingly placed it on a post right in front of me.  Two year old Braden thought they were fun as well~

  3. Mary, what a handsome bird with such a distinctness of color. This one has not been to visit us, although his brother the Pileated woodpecker visits frequently.

  4. Excellent! And congrats on seeing them :) Very exciting- they are SUCH cool birds, aren't they? Love the photos ! When we got our apt. in MS a few weeks ago we noticed one had a cavity in a nearby tree...something to look forward to when we head back there.

  5. Wonderful shots! I grew up with Woody the Woodpecker, too :-) Isn't it odd that the most well known looking woodpecker is the hardest to find? I have only once or twice seen one, also and the other woodpeckers I see very regularly. I've never had the chance for such great photos....perfect!
