She tapped several small holes, not deep holes, more like puncture holes, and then patiently waited as the sap began to flow~

I was totally taken by the expertise and gentle ways of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, as she tapped a line of tiny holes. We are having a respite from the bitter cold that held our area for nearly two weeks. I went out on our two acres yesterday and was pretty certain I had lucked out on any neat and interesting finds. That is when I heard a gentle tapping, nothing like when Woodpeckers are drilling for homes, or insects, but just a gentle tapping. Once I saw what it was, I knew that I could get fairly close, as these birds are quite friendly and fairly easy to get near. I watched as the she tapped several small holes, not deep holes, more like puncture holes, and then patiently waited as the sap began to flow. She stayed along side the tree for a long time, serving herself from each hole of the sweetness of the sap, many times over. She filled herself and then left the dripping sap, for possibly another visit later in the day~
